BackPedal was founded out of a frustration with that status quo.

Most people think getting stolen bikes back is impossible. For us that's not good enough which is why our team is made up of people with a fierce passion for doing the right thing, even if it's hard.

The story

BackPedal was founded in 2021 by James Dunn and Richard White based on a shared love of micromobility and the idea that the way we deal with theft is broken.

Locks can be cut. Insurance does nothing to stop the thief. They decided that recovery

In the early days they did all the theft recoveries themselves. Cutting their teeth across the South East of England.

Now they've (mostly) handed the fun part of the job over to a team of professionals and are focussed on bringing BackPedal to as many riders as possible.

Our mission & Values

Theft changes how all of us ride and is the number #2 reason why people in the UK don't take up cycling. We want to create a world where everyone can ride their bike or ebike without worrying about theft.

Doing hard things

Getting bikes back is a tough job. It means going to places most people don't want to go and doing things that make many unconformatable.

We're people who go the extra mile. There's no clock watchers or card stampers here.

With Good Judgement

It hurts us when we can't recover a bike. But, we'll never put our team or the public in harms way in the pursuit of recovery.

To achieve our mission we need to be around for a long time and to do that we need to always operate with good judgement.

And Compassion

When you have a theft we'll treat you with compassion, understanding and support.

Theft is uncommon but has an uncommonly large impact on people's finances, health and mental wellbeing. We'll make sure we do all we can to get you back on your wheels ASAP.
