Terms of service
Last updated: 28 October 2026 · See also our privacy policy.
1. Who we are, and who provides what
1.1 These terms are the contract between you and BackPedal Ltd (company no. 13487789, 86–90 Paul Street, London EC2A 4NE, VAT GB404211654) for the BackPedal protection service. They apply to plans bought from 28 October 2026. If you joined before then, section 9.8 says what is different for you.
1.2 Your protection has up to three parts, from two providers.
| Part | Who provides it | Governed by |
|---|---|---|
| Theft recovery service | BackPedal | These terms. Our Recovery Policy describes how it works day to day. |
| Self-fit Tracker kit (two trackers and casings) | BackPedal, sold to you | These terms |
| Backup theft insurance | Sundays Insurance, the trading name of Gator Bikesure Ltd (FCA 710920), an Appointed Representative of Twothreebird UK Ltd, authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority (313965). Underwritten by Red Sands Insurance Company (Europe) Ltd. | Sundays' policy documents: the policy terms, the Insurance Product Information Document and the security conditions |
| Taking your payment | Stripe, and Klarna where you choose it | Their terms for the payment method you pick |
1.3 How the insurance fits. BackPedal holds a master policy with Sundays. When you buy a plan that includes insurance, you become an insured person under that policy for the bike and value you tell us about. BackPedal is not an insurer and does not give insurance advice. The price you pay for the insurance part is Sundays' premium, including Insurance Premium Tax, plus a BackPedal service fee for arranging and administering your cover.
1.4 If documents disagree, this is the order that counts:
- For the insurance: Sundays' policy documents.
- The plan terms you agreed at checkout, repeated in your order confirmation.
- These terms.
- The Recovery Policy, our help pages and anything else on our site. They explain the service but do not change these terms.

2.2 Monthly prices are per bike and include VAT. Yearly and 3-year billing, and the discount for two or more bikes, are in section 6. The insurance price depends on the value you give for your bike; the checkout shows it before you pay.
2.3 The value you give us must be honest. On an insurance plan it sets your premium and the most Sundays will pay.
3. The recovery service
3.1 What we do. If your bike is stolen while your cover is active, our team goes after it. We review the tracking, plan the recovery, send our recovery agents, work alongside the police where appropriate, follow new leads as they come in and keep you informed. We keep going for as long as there is working tracking or a credible lead. There is no call-out fee, no excess and no limit on how many times we go out. When we recover your bike, we return it to you at a time and place we agree, or by courier.
3.2 What we need from you. Tell us as soon as you reasonably can after you discover the theft. Any of our channels works, but our 24/7 theft line is the quickest. Give us the details of the bike and the theft, share your tracker's location with us where we need it, and answer our reasonable questions while the recovery is running.
3.3 The police report. We file the police report with your help, or you can file it yourself and give us the crime reference. On an insurance plan, the theft must be reported to the police within 48 hours, because the insurance needs it (section 5).
3.4 It is our call how we recover. Every recovery is planned on the information we have and the safety of everyone involved. Sometimes we go straight away; sometimes watching the bike for a while gives a better chance of getting it back safely. Our team decides the strategy. You authorise us and our agents to recover your bike and return it to you.
3.5 Never recover a bike yourself. Recovery is for our trained agents and the police. Do not go after your bike or ask anyone else to.
3.6 What we can't promise. Tracking depends on things outside our control: the tracker, its battery and where it ends up, the mobile network, GPS signal, buildings and underground spaces. We do not guarantee that we will find or recover your bike, or that it comes back undamaged. If we don't recover it, section 4 says what you get back.
3.7 Damage. We are not liable for damage your bike suffers in the theft or before we return it, except damage caused by our own negligence while we recover it. On a plan with insurance, damage from a theft or an attempted theft can be claimed through Sundays. On the other plans, nobody covers theft damage.
3.8 Fair use. The service exists to recover genuinely stolen bikes. We won't refuse a recovery because of where you parked or which lock you used. In return, take reasonable care of your bike, use sensible security and keep your tracking working. We may suspend or end your plan if we reasonably believe a theft report is false, or the service is being used dishonestly.
3.9 Your own tracker (Recovery only, and Recovery + Insurance). We find your bike with the tracker you tell us about. Keep it charged, switched on and on the bike. Our Recovery Promise depends on it being on the bike and reporting when the theft happens (section 4).
3.10 Our Self-fit Tracker kit (Tracker + Recovery, and Tracker + Recovery + Insurance).
- After you pay, you tell us your bike's make and model on your order page. We choose casings for it and post the kit, normally within 2 working days of your confirming the casings suit your bike. We post to mainland UK addresses only.
- Fit the kit as soon as it arrives, following the fitting instructions we send. There is nothing to activate. Your cover starts when the trackers are on the bike.
- The kit is yours once you have had it for 30 days (section 7 covers returning it before then). While your plan is active we look after it: when the batteries run low we send you fresh trackers, and we replace a tracker that stops working through no fault of yours.
- The kit is for the bike you bought it for. If you move it to another bike, tell us (section 8).
3.11 Our Recovery Policy describes the service in more detail and is updated from time to time. It explains these terms; where it says something different, these terms apply.
4. Our Recovery Promise
Best case, we bring your bike home. Worst case, BackPedal cost you nothing. If your bike is stolen while your cover is active and we can't recover it, we refund everything you have paid us for that bike: your recovery subscription and, on a kit plan, the kit. On a plan with insurance, the insurance premium is not refunded, because that is what pays for your claim.
4.1 When the Promise applies. All of these must be true:
- The theft happened while your cover for that bike was active (section 2 says when cover starts).
- You told us about the theft as soon as you reasonably could.
- On a plan with your own tracker, the tracker was on the bike, charged and reporting when the theft happened. On a kit plan, the kit was fitted to the bike.
- You have not misled us about the bike, the theft or your tracking.
4.2 When we can't recover it. We will tell you in writing when we have closed the recovery without finding your bike. If we haven't told you either way within 14 days of your report, you can ask us for the refund. We may still keep looking after a refund, and if we later find your bike we will tell you and the police.
4.3 What happens next. The refund goes to the payment method you paid with. Your plan for that bike ends when we pay it, and we refund one theft per bike. If you have other bikes with us, their plans carry on. On an insurance plan your claim through Sundays is separate and unaffected.
4.4 The Promise is a refund of what you paid BackPedal. It is not insurance, it is not compensation for the bike's value, and it is not a payment towards a replacement. For the bike's value you need a plan with insurance.
5. Insurance
5.1 Only on the plans that include it. Recovery only and Tracker + Recovery are a recovery service, not insurance. Your bike's value is not insured on them.
5.2 Who insures you. On Recovery + Insurance and Tracker + Recovery + Insurance, you are an insured person under BackPedal's master policy with Sundays Insurance (section 1.3). Sundays' policy terms, product information document and security conditions set out exactly what is covered, what is not, and what you must do. Read them before you buy; we link to them at checkout, in your order confirmation and at backpedal.co/legal/terms. If anything here differs from them, they win.
5.3 What it is for. The insurance is the backup if we can't recover your bike, or if it is damaged in a theft or an attempted theft. You can claim for the bike up to the value you gave us, subject to the policy terms and security conditions. Every claim carries a £100 excess.
5.4 The main conditions, in our words. The policy documents are the full list.
- Lock the bike with a Sold Secure lock of the grade the security conditions require, through the frame to something immovable, whenever it is left.
- Keep it stored at home as the security conditions describe.
- Keep your tracker on the bike, charged and switched on. On a plan with your own tracker, a claim needs the tracker to have been working and charged.
- Report the theft to us and to the police within 48 hours, and get a crime reference.
- Be able to show you own the bike.
- Don't use the bike for professional, courier or hire work.
5.5 Making a claim. Tell us about the theft first, so the recovery starts straight away. If we can't recover the bike, claim through Sundays at sundaysinsurance.co.uk/partner-claims/backpedal. You must tell us about the theft as well as Sundays. We will give Sundays what they need from us, including your policy reference, cover dates and the tracking history. We suggest giving us a few days to recover the bike before you claim, but there is no deadline for claiming beyond those in the policy.
5.6 Paying for it. The insurance part of your price is Sundays' premium, including Insurance Premium Tax, plus our service fee (section 1.3). It is priced on the value you give for your bike. If you cancel, section 7 says what comes back.
5.7 Changes. If your bike changes, or its value changes, tell us and we will update your cover and price (section 8). If you don't, a claim may be reduced or refused under the policy terms.
5.8 Complaints about the insurance go to Sundays first, then to the Financial Ombudsman Service. Sundays' documents give the details.
6. Paying
6.1 Billing cycles. You choose how to pay for the recovery and insurance parts when you buy. The kit, on kit plans, is £89 per bike up front whichever cycle you choose.
| Monthly | Yearly | Every 3 years | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Recovery, per bike | £5.99 a month | £64.69 a year (10% off) | £172.51 (20% off) |
| Insurance, per bike | Priced on your bike's value, charged monthly | The same, with 10% off | The same, with 20% off |
| When we charge you | The day you buy, then every month | The day you buy, then every year | The day you buy, then every 3 years |
| How it continues | Until you cancel | Renews automatically each year until you cancel | Renews automatically every 3 years until you cancel |
| Before a renewal | We email you before each payment, with the date and the amount | We email you before it, with the date and the amount | We email you before it, with the date and the amount |
| After a renewal | — | 14 days to cancel for a full refund of that renewal | 14 days to cancel for a full refund of that renewal |
6.2 Two or more bikes. When you protect two or more bikes with us, every bike gets 10% off, kit and insurance included. If you add a bike later, the new bike gets 10% off from the start and your existing bikes get it from their next renewal.
6.3 Offers and discount codes have their own terms, shown when you buy. Unless the offer says otherwise, a discounted first period renews at the standard price for your plan and billing cycle.
6.4 Klarna. If you pay with Klarna, your agreement with Klarna covers the payment, and renewals are charged to Klarna in the same way unless you change your payment method with us.
6.5 If a payment fails, we tell you and try again. While a payment is overdue your cover is paused, and if it stays unpaid we may end your plan.
6.6 Price changes. We may change our prices, for example when our costs or our partners' prices change. We will email you at least 30 days before a new price applies to you, and you can cancel before it does with a refund as in section 7. A price change never affects a period you have already paid for.
6.7 Our prices include VAT where it applies. The insurance premium includes Insurance Premium Tax.
7. Cancelling, refunds and returns
7.1 How to cancel. Go to your billing page at pay.backpedal.co, also reached from My account on our site, and cancel there. Or get in touch and we will do it for you. You can cancel at any time, for any reason.
7.2 What you get back
| When you cancel | Plans with your own tracker | Plans with our kit |
|---|---|---|
| Within 14 days of a new purchase, on any billing cycle (renewals are in the row below) | Full refund | Full refund of your subscription. The kit is refunded too if you send it back within 30 days of delivery. |
| Within 30 days of the kit being delivered | — | Send the kit back and we refund it in full and pay the return postage. Your subscription is refunded as in the row that applies. |
| Later, paying monthly | Your protection stops at the end of the month you have paid for. Nothing to refund. | The same. The kit is yours to keep. |
| Later, paying yearly or every 3 years | We refund the months you haven't used. The months you have used are charged at the monthly price, so the yearly or 3-year discount no longer applies to them. | The same. The kit is yours to keep. |
| Within 14 days of a yearly or 3-year renewal | Full refund of that renewal | The same |
| After a Recovery Promise refund | Your plan for that bike has already ended | The same |
7.3 A worked example. You pay £89 for the kit and £64.69 for a year of Tracker + Recovery. Five months in, you cancel. Five months at the monthly price is £29.95, so we refund £34.74 of the £64.69. The kit is yours.
7.4 Insurance plans. The unused part of your insurance premium is refunded on the same basis as the recovery part, and your insurance ends on the day your plan does.
7.5 Sending the kit back. Tell us and we email you a prepaid returns label. Post everything we sent you within 14 days of telling us. Trying to fit the kit is fine and doesn't affect your refund. If parts are missing, or broken beyond what fitting and removing them would cause, we may reduce the refund by the loss in value. We refund within 14 days of getting the kit back, or of your showing us proof of posting, whichever comes first.
7.6 How refunds are paid. To the payment method you paid with, within 14 days of our agreeing the refund (for a kit return, 7.5 says when the 14 days start), and usually much sooner.
7.7 We can end your plan if you break these terms, if a payment stays unpaid (section 6.5), or if we reasonably believe you have been dishonest with us. Unless you were dishonest, we refund the months you haven't used.
7.8 After your plan ends, your cover ends on that day. We stop monitoring your trackers and the Recovery Promise doesn't apply to a later theft. Any kit you have kept is yours, but it no longer does anything.
8. Changing your bike, owner or plan
8.1 A different bike. Tell us about the new bike. On a kit plan, move the kit to it; we send new casings if the old ones don't fit. On an insurance plan we reprice the insurance to the new bike's value. The recovery price stays the same. Your cover for the old bike ends when you tell us.
8.2 Selling your bike. Get in touch and we can move your protection to the buyer. They accept these terms, and on an insurance plan they must be 18 or over and give us their details. Your plan ends when theirs starts.
8.3 Adding insurance later. Get in touch and we add it. You pay the difference between your plan and the insurance plan from then on. Cover starts as section 2 says for the insurance plan you move to.
8.4 Another bike. Buy a plan for it as usual. Section 6.2 gives every bike 10% off.
8.5 Moving home. Tell us your new address. We post kit to mainland UK addresses only.
9. Legal
9.1 Our responsibility to you. Nothing in these terms limits our liability for death or personal injury caused by our negligence, for fraud, or for anything the law says we can't limit. Otherwise we are responsible for loss you suffer that is a foreseeable result of our breaking these terms or failing to use reasonable care, and not for loss we could not have foreseen. We are not responsible for the value of a stolen bike: on the plans that include it, that is what the insurance is for. We are not responsible for business losses, as our service is for personal use. Beyond that, our total liability to you for a bike is limited to what you have paid us for that bike in the 12 months before the problem arose. Our Recovery Promise is a refund, not compensation, and this limit does not reduce it.
9.2 Changing these terms. We may change these terms, for example to reflect a change in the law, in our service or in how we provide it. We will email you at least 30 days before a change applies to you, and you can cancel before it does with a refund as in section 7. A change that the law requires, or that only improves things for you, may apply sooner.
9.3 Your account. The details you give us must be accurate and kept up to date, including your bike's make, model and value and your address. You must be 18 or over to buy, and you are responsible for what happens under your account.
9.4 Your data. Our privacy policy says how we use your personal data. To run the service we process your trackers' location data, and when your bike is stolen we share what we need to with the police and, on an insurance plan, with Sundays.
9.5 Complaints. Email team@backpedal.co. We will acknowledge your complaint within 7 days and give you a full answer within 14 days. Complaints about the insurance go to Sundays and then the Financial Ombudsman Service (section 5.8).
9.6 Law and courts. These terms are governed by the law of England and Wales. If you live in Scotland or Northern Ireland you can also bring a claim in your local courts.
9.7 General.
- We may transfer this contract to another business, for example if we sell BackPedal. We will tell you, and your rights are not affected. You may only transfer it as section 8.2 allows.
- Nobody other than you and us has rights under these terms, except that your rights under the Sundays policy are governed by that policy.
- If a court finds part of these terms unenforceable, the rest still applies.
- If we don't enforce something straight away, we can still enforce it later.
- Neither of us is responsible for a delay or failure caused by something outside our reasonable control, such as a network outage, extreme weather or action by a public authority. This doesn't excuse paying what is due.
- We contact you by email, at the address on your account, and by posting notices on our site. You can contact us as section 1.5 says.
- These terms, your plan terms and the documents in section 1.4 are the whole agreement between us.
9.8 If you joined before 28 October 2026 through our installed-tracker service, these points apply to you instead of the ones they replace:
- Your first year was an annual subscription covering your tracker, its installation, recovery and backup insurance. If you cancel in that first year, we refund the unused part and you return the tracking kit to us.
- From your second year, dated from your install anniversary, you can stay annual at up to 20% off your first-year price or switch to monthly billing at 10% off.
- Our Recovery Promise (section 4) applies to a theft you report on or after 28 October 2026.
