
Choosing a bike tracker is usually done by reading spec sheets written by people who have never recovered a stolen bike. We have recovered over 1,000 of them.
That changes what matters. Nobody cares how fast a device pings in a car park test. What matters is whether the tracker is still fitted, still powered and still reporting several hours after somebody has cut a lock and ridden off. Most reviews never measure that, because most reviewers never get to the part where you knock on a door.
So this is not an unboxing. Every verdict below comes from real theft recoveries: what we found still working, what we found ripped out in a hedge, and what actually put us in front of the bike. One theme runs through all of it: a dot on a map is not a bike back. Located is not recovered.
Who we are, before you read the verdicts. BackPedal is a bike recovery company with insurance behind it. We do not sell any of the trackers reviewed here and we earn nothing from whichever one you choose. The kit described at the end is our own, fitted to bikes we protect and covered by the subscription rather than sold separately.

- Best for e-bikes: PowUnity BikeTrax. Possibly the best raw GPS performance of any tracker you can buy, and the easiest proper tracker to fit to a mid-drive e-bike.
- Best for a non-electric bike: BikeFinder, but only if you will genuinely keep it charged.
- Best budget option: Apple AirTag. Cheap, universal, and a nod towards bike security rather than a recovery plan. Fit two.
- Best built-in: Cowboy. You cannot buy it separately, but a thief cannot really disable it either.

How we judge a bike tracker
Every metric below has a plain definition, because these words get used loosely in tracker marketing.
Cost we note where there is a UK price to note, and we count the subscription as well as the sticker, because a cheap device with an annual data fee is not cheap. Installation covers where it hides, how covert it ends up, and whether the hiding place kills the GPS signal or lets water in.
Battery behaviour after the theft is the metric almost nobody publishes, and the one we care about most. A tracker that stops reporting six hours in has not helped anybody.
Proximity detection is the last ten metres. GPS gets you to a building; proximity tells you which flat. Most trackers cannot do it, and the ones that can are not always honest about how well.
Then the honest verdict from recovery work: what failed, and whether we would want it on a bike we had to get back.
The three types of bike tracker, and why the difference matters
There are three ways a bike tracker can tell you where your bike is, and they fail in completely different ways. If you only take one thing from this guide, take this.
Bluetooth crowd network devices, such as the Apple AirTag and Knog Scout, have no GPS chip and no SIM. They shout into the air and any passing iPhone quietly relays their position, so accuracy depends entirely on how many phones walk past. On a busy high street that is very good. In a lock-up behind a block of flats it is close to useless.
Cellular GPS trackers, such as PowUnity BikeTrax, our Live & Sleeper trackers and BikeFinder, work out their own position and report it over the mobile network. They need no one else's phone. They do need power, a reasonable view of the sky and a data subscription.
Built-in tracking systems, such as the one in a Cowboy, are fitted at the factory. The tracking is often unremarkable; what makes them interesting is that there is nothing for a thief to find and pull out.
The upshot: crowd network devices tell the thief they exist, cellular devices need power and a sensible hiding place, and built-in devices survive but do not always tell you much. No single tracker covers all three problems, which is why we fit at least two pieces of kit to every bike we protect.
The trackers, reviewed
Apple AirTag review: cheap, universal, but it tells the thief it is there (BackPedal have recovered 10+ bikes using this tracker)
A Bluetooth tag that borrows every nearby iPhone to report its location. Brilliant value as a general item finder. It was never designed to survive a bike thief, and it announces itself to one.
The basics: a replaceable coin cell lasting about a year, so no charging, and a huge aftermarket of mounts from inner tube sleeves to bells and bottle cage bolts. Precision Finding walks you to within centimetres once you are in Bluetooth range, which is useful for the last ten metres. It is iPhone only, and at £29 for one or £99 for a four-pack it is comfortably the cheapest credible option here. Add a pound a year in coin cells and £5 to £25 for a decent mount and you are still under £60 across three years, which nothing else here comes close to.
Here is the problem no installation can fix. Apple's anti-stalking features alert nearby phones that an unknown AirTag is travelling with them, and the tag periodically beeps. However well you hide it, the thief gets told to go looking. We have repeatedly turned up to find the tag and not the bike, sitting in a hedge or on a footpath.
A common sense solution is to fit two of them. This is the most useful AirTag tip we have, and it comes from a real recovery. Thieves who find one tag usually stop looking, and the decoy buys the second one time.
Be realistic about geography. A busy high street produces frequent, accurate updates. Blocks of flats, quiet suburban streets and garages produce stale, vague locations where it is often unclear which building the bike is in. There is no live tracking, just intermittent pings, and the owner has to share the Find My item before anyone else can help. Battery is the one metric where it beats everything here: it is essentially never dead when the theft happens.
The recovery that sums it up happened in Whitechapel. The owner had fitted two AirTags. One was found and discarded quickly; the second survived. The location was only roughly right, so our agent drove the area and spotted the bike by eye, locked to railings. Our read is that the thief had worked out somebody was hunting it and abandoned it. We got the bike back. That one job contains all three AirTag truths: tags get found, the network gets you to the neighbourhood rather than the bike, and recovery is still possible.
We had one in London recently where the bike actually had two AirTags hidden on it. The thieves obviously found one pretty quickly and ripped it off, probably thinking they’d sorted it, but they completely missed the second one. That carried on pinging and got us into the right area. Being London there were loads of iPhones about, so we were getting fairly regular updates. In the end we found the bike dumped on the street. We think the thief might have realised we were onto them and decided it wasn’t worth the risk, so just abandoned it. They can be really handy for stuff like that, but they’re definitely not the same as a proper GPS tracker. You’re relying on other Apple devices being nearby, so sometimes you can go ages without an update, especially outside busy areas. It’s difficult as an AirTag is easily detectable on different Apple devices, so the thief is now aware it has a tracker, which will prompt them to take it off. PowUnity BikeTrax review: the best live tracking you can buy (BackPedal have recovered 100+ bikes using this tracker)
A wired-in GPS tracker for mid-drive e-bikes, with live tracking good enough to follow a thief in real time. We have recovered hundreds of bikes with it.
It wires into the e-bike's main battery and carries a separate backup battery on a wire. Fitting kits cover Bosch, Brose, Yamaha, Shimano and Giant, plus a universal option. Buy 4G regardless of what the 2G switch-off timetable says this month. UK retail runs from about £170, with the first year of data included and an annual fee after that.
Installation is a strength. The motor-specific kits make it about as shop and DIY friendly as a proper tracker gets, and the unit is slim enough that the tracker and its backup battery can sit in separate parts of the frame. Two cautions. Do not bury it too deep, because we have seen plenty of installs where the frame smothers the GPS, and that applies to every GPS tracker. And under the motor cover is the obvious hiding place, which is why we suspect smarter thieves now check there; those covers are plastic and held on with screws, and we have found BikeTrax units removed.

The tracking is excellent, possibly the best we have seen: very accurate, with a fast update rate. We have live-tracked bikes mid-chase, following as the thief cycled, and the updates were timely enough that we simply followed and caught them when they stopped.
Chasing someone with a live tracker is like running for the bus. You can see it. But you just need to get there. If we speed up a little more and get ahead of the bus we eventually catch it. The app is functional rather than rich: each data point gives a time and a location but no accuracy figure. The movement alert works well, though some users struggle to get the audible alarm going on their phone.
With the bike battery connected it signals frequently. With the bike off, the internal backup takes over and gives you weeks. The failure point is that the backup sits separately from the tracker, so there is a water ingress risk, and we have seen backup batteries killed by water.
Verdict: if it is working in the lead-up to the theft you get a very timely stolen alert, and if a recovery team moves quickly there is a strong chance of getting the bike back. You do have to stomach the data fees.
BikeFinder review: hidden in the handlebars, let down by charging (BackPedal have recovered 5+ bikes using this tracker)
A covert GPS bike tracker that slides into your handlebar, with the Bluetooth proximity detection most rivals lack. It is also the device that taught us how important proximity detection is.
It fits any bike with a suitable handlebar, electric or not, which makes it one of the few proper GPS options for an unpowered bike. It is easy to install, very covert, and we did not really find examples of thieves removing it. Covertness genuinely works, and the proximity detection is fantastic.
There are two problems, both about power and attention. The first is a design flaw: the part protruding at the bar end is the GPS antenna. Sitting at the edge of the handlebars it gets knocked over time, and we have seen antennas damaged to the point that GPS stopped working. The manufacturer confirmed this and sells replacement heads, but it relies on the owner noticing their GPS has degraded.
The second is the heart of this review. BikeFinder is charged by the owner over USB and does not draw power from the bike, so a recovery runs on a finite power budget. Fully charged you have multiple days. If the bike is stolen at twenty or thirty per cent, it limits how aggressively we can pull signals. Often manageable, never ideal.
What we saw over and over was customers whose bike was stolen with a flat tracker. “I do keep it charged, I just haven't recently”. Weekly USB charging on a bike that lives in a shed simply does not happen, and James found it a chore on his own bike too.
In our early days, we saw it time and again where our customers had their bike stolen but they hadn’t kept their tracker charged. It’s devastating knowing you have the kit but can do nothing with it. That changed our policy: we moved away from user-charged devices altogether. There is nothing worse than a stolen bike with a tracker fitted but the battery is flat.
It still delivered our first ever recovery, and it proved that proximity detection is essential rather than a nice extra. Verdict: a good device if you keep it charged and protect the antenna, best suited to non-electric bikes. If you have an e-bike, fit something wired in. In the UK it runs to about £170, with a subscription from £2.99 a month on a two-year plan.
Knog Scout review: a sacrificial first line of defence
Worth being straight about this one: we have limited recovery experience with the Scout, so what follows is an informed view of the form factor rather than a recovery-proven verdict like the others above.
Underneath, it is essentially an Apple AirTag in a bike-shaped body. It uses the same Find My crowd network, so it inherits every tracking trade-off the AirTag has: good in iPhone-dense areas, weak where stolen bikes end up, iPhone only, and it announces itself to thieves.
What it adds is an 85dB motion-sensitive alarm and a proper mount, bolting to bottle cage bosses with tamper-resistant screws. It charges by USB-C, giving months between charges, though the wider point about user-charged devices still applies. Installation is about as easy as it gets, and it costs from about £33 with no subscription, heavily discounted across UK retailers against a £50 list price.
The trade-off is that a bottle mount is one of the first places a thief looks, which is why we would treat it as a sacrificial tracker with two jobs. The alarm alerts you while the theft is happening, so you have a chance to interrupt it. And if the bike does go, the thief finds and disables the Scout fairly easily, and hopefully stops looking, leaving whatever else is fitted in place.

The Knog is best suited to riders who will always be with their bike. Think road cyclists who have stopped at a cafe. If you are going to be nearby your bike and the motion alarm alerts you, there's a good chance it could scare off or deter the thief.
If you frequently leave your bike unattended, the Knog is best as a sensible component of a layered setup rather than a standalone answer. Do not buy it expecting better tracking than an AirTag, because it is the same network underneath.
Cowboy built-in tracking review: weak signal, almost impossible to kill (BackPedal have recovered 40+ bikes using this tracker)
Cowboy builds GPS tracking into its e-bikes, wired in with its own backup battery. You cannot buy it separately, so this is a reason to buy the bike rather than a buying decision for the tracker itself.
Installation is best in class for the simple reason that you do not do it. Manufacturer integration beats any aftermarket hiding place: nothing for the owner to fit, and very little for a thief to remove. This is where bike trackers should be heading.
The tracking is decent rather than great. Updates can be sporadic and imprecise, and it is common to watch the reported position hop around, consistent with Cowboy's published rates of roughly every fifteen minutes while moving and much less when stationary. Weak GPS would be survivable with strong proximity detection to finish the job, but the built-in proximity finding may only work when the bike is on or was recently on, so the two weaknesses compound.
The app is standard consumer fare with sensible light, alarm and locking features. One thing is genuinely useful for recovery: the bike, or a web link after a theft, can be shared, so we can get our agents access quickly. Worth knowing before you count the tracking as free, though: in the UK, Find My Bike and theft alerts both sit behind Cowboy Connect, a £179 one-off add-on. Core connectivity, which every bike comes with, does not include GPS tracking.
Battery after theft runs to weeks on the backup, and because the tracker is integrated, the moment anybody switches the bike on it starts charging and signalling again.
We have recovered nearly 50 Cowboys. They are not the easiest bikes to recover, but because the tracker is so hard to disable we often get them in the end. The tracker outlasts the thief's patience, which is this whole article in one sentence.
What about the other trackers?
A few devices come up constantly and are not reviewed above, either because we have not recovered enough bikes fitted with them to say anything we’re confident in, or because they are not really recovery tools.
VanMoof is the notable omission. We have not recovered enough VanMoofs to give an honest verdict, and writing one anyway would break the premise of this article.
- Bosch Connect Module - limited to Bosch motors, generation four onwards. Similar to PowUnity, but more covert. Generally decent tracking, although the app isn't designed for theft recovery. Bosch have been making improvements to this, and we expect this to be a common tracker.
- Speedbox – a wired GPS tracker providing live location updates with a variety of fitting kits for different motor types.
- Invoxia – well respected French tracker manufacturer across pets, automotive and bikes. Avoid the classic version which is LoRa/Sigfox and has poor connectivity in the UK. The Pro versions are designed more for cars and suitcases so check dimensions carefully and think how you will hide it.
- AlterLock – Similar to the Knog in form factor but with full GPS tracking. Also includes cell and Bluetooth connectivity. Includes motion alarm to deter thieves.
- Tile / Chipolo - run on similar networks to Apple Find My but for Android. They don't have the anti-stalker features, which is a benefit, but network and tracking performance is much worse.
- Samsung Galaxy SmartTag - Samsung's version of Apple Find My, but for Samsung devices.
- Vodafone Curve - discontinued in 2024.
The kit we use ourselves
We do not publish which hardware we fit. It is not commercially available; it is sourced against everything in this article, the good points and the failures. What it does is worth explaining, because it is the direct product of the lessons above. We always fit at least two pieces, doing slightly different jobs, with redundancy if one is found or fails.
Live GPS review: the one we use and the big e-bike brands fit at the factory (BackPedal have recovered 400+ bikes using this tracker)
A wired-in 4G tracker, not sold to the public in the UK, and the live tracker fitted to more of our customers' bikes than any other. One of our co-founders runs it on his own bike.
The important difference from PowUnity is that the backup battery sits inside the same housing as the tracker. That makes the unit larger and harder to home, but considerably more resilient: we do not see the water damage failures here that we see with separately housed backup batteries.
It was historically supplied with bare wires to splice into the bike's electrics. Motor-specific kits are now arriving, PowUnity style, which makes it far more mass market. Because the unit is bigger it usually ends up under the motor cover, and the same warning applies about where a professional thief will look.
UK retail is the catch: nobody sells this one directly to the public, which is why it arrives fitted rather than bought.
In recovery work it is really strong, and it gives us something no other off-the-shelf tracker does: a portal with far finer-grained detail, including accuracy, temperature and speed. That sounds like trivia until you are stood in a courtyard deciding which of three buildings to try. We only get this extra data for trackers we've supplied rather than ones fitted into your bike at the factory though, unfortunately.

Battery after theft runs to weeks or months, probably the longest lasting we have seen. Verdict: highly accurate GPS with a lot of supporting data behind it, and for our recovery operations probably the best live tracker on this list.
The sleeper GPS (BackPedal have recovered 500+ bikes using this tracker)
A long-life battery GPS device that does not need wiring in. It sleeps until we wake it after a theft.
It removes the two failure modes this article keeps running into. Nobody has to remember to charge it, which is the BikeFinder lesson, and there is no wiring, so no predictable hiding place under a motor cover, which is the PowUnity and It's My Bike lesson. It is small enough to suit a lot of spaces, on the bike or inside one of the custom casings we have developed. We set how often it wakes and what it sends, and we have built our own cell triangulation for when GPS is not possible.
We've built our tracking and recovery software architecture from the ground up, based on years of experience of what it takes to actually get a bike back. Our system automatically analyses where a bike stops and provides fine-grained alerts to our team and agents when recovery is actionable. The honest trade-off: it is very hard for a thief to find or disable, but after a theft we have to wait for it to check in before we can switch it into higher-fidelity tracking. In practice that rarely costs us anything, because it is well hidden. It does not get removed, and we recover as soon as we have decent tracking from it. That is the lesson of every review above: covert and reliable beats instant. You cannot recover with a tracker that has been disabled or is broken.

The proximity beacons (BackPedal have recovered 600+ bikes using this tracker)
Long-range, long-life Bluetooth beacons running the latest BLE modes, constantly sending a signal that only we know how to identify and match to a given bike.

They exist because we learned early that GPS alone is not enough. GPS gets you to the approximate house, or to a block of flats. It usually cannot tell you exactly where the bike is, or whether it is definitely still there.
The physics is simpler than it sounds. Unlike GPS, a Bluetooth beacon needs no view of the sky. Picture a sphere of signal around the device: things in the way shrink the sphere, they do not make it vanish. It hides happily in far more places than a GPS unit will tolerate, so long as it is not fully encased in metal.
Our agents detect the signal with phones or with custom scanning kit, and the moment we pick one up, confidence jumps. After that it is a game of hot and cold with signal strength until we are on it. That is how we have recovered bikes from the backs of gardens, from hidden compartments in sheds, and from blocks of flats where we could identify the exact flat. They do something a GPS unit does not do and an AirTag does not do, and they are the reason proximity detection appears in every review above.
These proximity beacons are fundamental to reliable, effective recovery, and it's one of the things that sets our service apart from most stand-alone trackers. We've sourced these to provide a combination of long range, reliability, and battery life.
We've also developed our own proprietary scanning software, which allows our agents to automatically pick up signals and then home in on a given bike. In addition, we provided our agents with specialist long-range scanning kit, think a man walking around with an antenna that boosts the range of these devices even further.
Without a beacon my odds of recovery are 50/50. With a beacon I have 80% more confidence. Beacons are a game changer, even for example the theft I'm at now. A tracker is not a lock

A tracker is the recovery layer, not the prevention layer. It does not stop the theft; it gives you a chance afterwards. Pair whatever you choose with a properly rated lock.
On fitting, the principles are simple, even if we will not publish a map of hiding places: covert, secure, not smothered by the frame or a metal housing, and away from water and road spray. Those four cover most of the installation failures we see.
If your bike is stolen, the order matters. Report it and get a crime reference number. Share access to your tracker straight away, because on several devices the owner has to actively share before anybody else can see anything. And do not go and confront thieves on your own. That last one is not legal boilerplate; it is the single piece of advice we repeat most often.
If a bike has already gone and there is a tracker on it, speed matters more than anything else on this page. Tell us as early as you can and share your tracker access; the first few hours are where recoveries are won or lost.
Bike tracker FAQ
Do bike trackers actually work?
Yes, but not on their own. A tracker gets you to an approximate location; getting the bike back usually needs proximity detection, someone able to attend, and a device that survived the theft. We have recovered over 1,000 bikes, and the tracker is one part of that, not the whole of it.
Can thieves detect an AirTag?
Yes. Apple's anti-stalking features alert nearby phones when an unknown AirTag is travelling with them, and the tag beeps periodically. No hiding place changes that. It is why we suggest fitting two, so the one they find acts as a decoy for the one they do not.
Do bike trackers need a subscription?
It depends on the type. Bluetooth crowd network tags such as the AirTag and Knog Scout have no subscription. Cellular GPS trackers need mobile data, so they carry either an annual fee, a monthly fee, or a multi-year bundle included in the purchase price. Always compare over three years rather than on sticker price.
Where is the best place to hide a tracker on a bike?
Somewhere covert, dry, not fully wrapped in metal, and not the first place anyone looks. We deliberately do not publish specific hiding spots, because thieves read buying guides too. What we will say is that under a motor cover is now a place experienced thieves check.
The shortest answer: buy a wired-in e-bike tracker if you have an e-bike and you're confident you can fit it, buy BikeFinder if you do not and you will genuinely keep it charged, and add an AirTag or two as a cheap extra layer whatever else you fit.
The more useful answer runs through every review above. The best bike tracker is not the one with the fastest ping on a spec sheet. It is the one still fitted, still powered and still talking to somebody several hours after the theft, backed by a way to find the bike once you are on the right street. Located is not recovered.
That is the thinking behind the kit we fit.
