How ebike theft actually works
Ebikes are stolen for parts more often than as complete bikes. A high-value battery, a Bosch or Brose motor, a carbon frame and quality groupset can be split out and sold on second-hand sites within days. Once the parts are out, recovery becomes impossible.
BackPedal's theft cover leads with recovery for this reason — every hour that passes makes the bike harder to get back as a whole. The tracker and 24/7 ops team are the actual product; the insurance side is the backup if recovery fails. Most subscribers never reach the insurance step.

What's covered under ebike theft insurance?
Ebike theft cover handles the ebike, battery, motor, attached accessories at the time of theft, and damage caused during a theft attempt. Recovery service is the primary tool — most subscribers never claim under the insurance side. If insurance does kick in, £50 fixed excess applies (£200 on battery-only claims).
Is the battery covered if stolen separately?
Yes, with a higher excess (£200) for battery-only claims. Standalone battery theft typically happens at charging stations or workplaces. Battery damage from attempted theft is covered without the higher excess if the bike is the primary target.
How does ebike theft cover interact with recovery?
Recovery runs first. If we get the ebike back within the recovery window, the insurance side doesn't trigger and you pay no excess at all. If recovery fails, the Sundays-backed insurance steps in as a backup, subject to standard policy terms. Both bundled into one subscription — no separate theft-cover product.
Is damage during an attempted theft covered?
Yes. Theft cover includes damage caused during a failed theft attempt — partially-cut locks, frame damage from a thief trying to remove the bike, ripped components. The repair is paid under the same theft-cover claim.
Does ebike theft cover apply across the UK?
Yes — both recovery and insurance run UK-wide. We already recover bikes for nationwide fleet partners from anywhere in the country. The one thing that's regional right now is the consumer mobile install network: a BackPedal mechanic visits to fit the tracker, and that mobile visit is currently available in London zones 1–4. Outside zones 1–4, individual install isn't yet available; the install network expands in 2026.
