Mountain bike insurance that gets your MTB back.
MTBs get stolen from trail-centre car parks, vans at race weekends, and garden sheds. BackPedal fits a covert tracker and deploys a recovery team if it goes missing — backed up by insurance for the rare cases recovery can't fix.

MTB-specific theft risk
Mountain bikes get stolen in three places more than anywhere else: trail-centre car parks during rides, vans on race weekends, and home sheds with weaker security than the bikes inside them. Drivetrain components, forks, and dropper posts are particularly targeted for resale.
Standard bike insurance doesn't distinguish — a £4k enduro bike with a Fox 38 and an XX1 drivetrain is priced and covered the same way as a cheap commuter. BackPedal's tracker plus active recovery is what makes the maths work on a high-end MTB: the bike comes home before the parts get split out.
Where MTBs need cover
From a damp shed to a Bike Park Wales car park to a 24-hour endurance event — the bike's insured throughout.
Trail centres
Theft from public car parks at recognised UK trail centres (Glentress, Coed y Brenin, Cwmcarn, Afan, Surrey Hills, Cannock Chase, etc.) is covered.
Race & event weekends
XC, endurance, and recognised DH events at bike parks are covered for theft and theft damage. Crash damage during racing sits under BC racing insurance.
Home storage
Garage, shed, or indoor storage at your registered address — covered without the strict 'immovable object' clause most policies enforce.
On the roof or in the van
Bike-rack and vehicle-stored bikes are covered during transit to and from rides and events.

Traditional bike
insurance vs
BackPedal
A bike is stolen every 2 minutes in the UK. Fewer than 2% of thieves are ever caught. Traditional insurers don't care — they just price it into your premium. The thief profits. You start again. Nothing changes.
BackPedal is different. We track your bike, recover it, and return it to you — so the thief gets nothing. Insurance is our backup, not our business model.
If we can't recover your bike, our backup insurance by Sundays kicks in — the same kind of cover you'd get from any other bike insurer. Standard terms apply and claims are subject to approval.
Race-day and event cover
Cross-country, endurance, and enduro events at recognised UK venues are covered for theft throughout the weekend. The bike's insured during transit, in the pits, and at the trailhead. Crash damage during racing typically sits with British Cycling's racing licence cover, not standard insurance.
DH event weekends at bike parks (Fort William, Antur Stiniog, Innerleithen, Wales) get the same treatment — theft and theft damage are insured. We've recovered bikes lifted from race-weekend car parks before; the kit is what makes it possible.
Mountain bike insurance FAQs
Does mountain bike cover include downhill and DH events?
Yes — downhill events at recognised UK bike parks (Bike Park Wales, Fort William, Innerleithen, Antur Stiniog, etc.) are covered for theft and theft-related damage. Crash damage during racing isn't typically covered (that's what BC racing insurance is for), but the bike itself remains insured against theft throughout race weekends.
What about e-MTBs?
E-MTBs have their own dedicated cover at /ebike-insurance/e-mtb — same recovery service plus ebike battery and motor cover. If you're on an e-MTB, that's the right page for you.
Are trail centres covered?
Yes. Theft from public bike racks at trail centres (Glentress, Coed y Brenin, Cwmcarn, Afan, Surrey Hills, etc.) falls under standard cover. Most trail-centre thefts happen from car park bike racks during a ride — recovery service helps here, though we can't reach remote venues as quickly as we can central London.
Can I race with my MTB insured?
Cross-country (XC) and endurance events (12hr / 24hr) are covered for the bike and components against theft and incident damage. Enduro and DH events at recognised venues are covered for theft. Closed-circuit racing falls under BC racing insurance — same rule as road bikes.
Is my high-end MTB worth tracking?
£2k+ MTBs are a classic theft target — same demographic as premium road bikes, plus organised demand for parts in the trail community. The covert tracker pays back fast if your bike's stolen from a car park or trailhead. Recovery rate isn't 100% just because the bike's expensive, but the tracker tilts the odds heavily in your favour.
