Why e-MTBs need specific cover
E-MTBs are a particular theft target: £4k–£8k typical values, sought-after batteries and motors that can be split out for resale, and the bikes regularly end up in unattended car parks at trail centres or in vans during race weekends. The whole-bike-to-parts conversion happens fast — often within 24 hours of a theft.
Standard MTB insurance doesn't address the e-bike specifics. BackPedal's cover bundles battery, motor, accessories, and a covert tracker — combined with active recovery, the bike is much more likely to come home as a complete bike rather than as a list of components.

E-MTB insurance FAQs
What does e-MTB insurance cover?
Theft, theft damage, battery, motor, and recovery service — same as standard ebike cover but with trail and event-weekend scenarios in mind. £50 fixed excess on insurance claims, £0 on recovery claims, £200 on battery-only claims.
Are e-MTB enduro and DH events covered?
Theft from event weekends at recognised UK venues (Innerleithen, Glentress, Bike Park Wales, Fort William, etc.) is covered. Crash damage during racing typically falls under BC racing insurance rather than standard cover. Talk to us if you race regularly so we can confirm the right setup.
Is my battery covered when range-extending or charging on the trail?
Battery theft and theft damage are covered including in trail-side scenarios. If your battery's stolen separately (e.g. from a vehicle while you're on the trail), the standalone battery excess of £200 applies. Manufacturer warranty handles natural failures.
Is a £6k e-MTB worth insuring?
Almost always. E-MTBs combine the highest theft demand (high resale, sought-after components) with the highest replacement cost. The tracker pays for itself quickly — most e-MTBs we cover never become claims because recovery brings them home before parts get split out.
Is my e-MTB covered on the bike rack in transit?
Yes — bike-rack and vehicle-stored e-MTBs are covered during transit to and from rides and events. The covert tracker keeps reporting while the bike's on a roof rack or in a van. We've recovered bikes lifted from car parks at trailheads before.
