London accounts for the largest share of UK bike theft. Ebikes are a particular target: high values, organised resale routes, and a steady supply of unattended bike-parks at every station and office. Most thefts happen overnight or during the daytime work hours when bikes are locked up unattended.
BackPedal's recovery team is built for this. We recover bikes UK-wide, but London is where we deploy fastest — agents on the ground in the central zones can intercept a moving bike before it leaves the city, which matters most in the first 6–12 hours after a theft. London ebike insurance FAQs
Which London zones does BackPedal cover?
London zones 1–4 is where the mobile install network is currently active — a BackPedal mechanic visits your home, office, or any spot you choose to fit the tracker. Zones 5–6 are coming next. Once installed, the tracker travels with your bike anywhere; recovery itself runs UK-wide and we already recover bikes nationwide for fleet partners. Within central London our agent density is highest, which is why recovery is fastest here.
Is my ebike covered if locked up overnight outside?
Yes — recovery service has no exclusions for overnight outdoor storage. Insurance side may apply higher excess or exclusions for unattended overnight storage in some scenarios, but recovery runs regardless. London commuters are our highest-recovery segment for this reason.
What about ebike theft from train stations and tube racks?
Covered. Network Rail and TfL bike-park theft is one of the most common scenarios we see. The covert tracker works in underground spaces (the GSM and BLE components handle indoor signal). Most recovered ebikes from rail-station thefts come home within 48 hours.
What if my ebike's stolen from work?
Workplace and office bike-park theft is covered. We're particularly familiar with the City and Canary Wharf bike-park theft patterns. Recovery agents are usually deployed within an hour of the report.
I live outside London — does ebike insurance still work?
The insurance side covers UK-wide. Trackers work UK-wide and we work with police anywhere in the country. Active agent recovery is currently London-only, so if you're outside London the recovery process relies more heavily on police coordination than agent deployment.
