The UK bike insurance landscape
There are five main bicycle insurance options in the UK worth comparing: Laka, Bikmo, PedalSure, Yellow Jersey, and BackPedal. They split into three categories.
Traditional payout insurers (Bikmo, PedalSure, Yellow Jersey) — pay premiums, claim when a bike's stolen, receive a payout. Differences are mostly UX, price, and claims-handling speed. Yellow Jersey adds broader cycling cover (race, travel, event).
Community pool (Laka) — members contribute to a shared pot, no excess, payouts come from the pool. Strong community focus; well-suited to cyclists who like the model.
Recovery-first (BackPedal) — a 24/7 recovery team retrieves the bike when it's stolen; the Sundays-backed insurance steps in only if recovery fails. Different product solving the same problem differently.
Why recovery beats payouts
If your bike comes back, you don't need a payout. There's no excess, no waiting for a claim, no replacement-bike compromise — you ride the bike you already had. That's the BackPedal angle and why we lead with recovery.
Recovery runs UK-wide. We already protect thousands of ebikes for nationwide fleet partners and recover their bikes from anywhere in the country — the recovery team isn't a London-only operation. The covert tracker reports position wherever the bike ends up, our 24/7 ops team monitors continuously, and recovery agents go and get the bike back.
The one thing that's currently regional is the consumer install network: a BackPedal mechanic visits to professionally fit the tracker, and that mobile visit is currently available in London zones 1–4. Fleet bikes get bulk-installed at depots, which is why fleet cover already runs nationwide. The consumer install network expands in 2026.

What's the best bike insurance in the UK?
It depends on what you value. The major UK options — Laka, Bikmo, PedalSure, Yellow Jersey, and BackPedal — each have a different angle. Laka uses a community pool model with no excess; Bikmo is the traditional incumbent; PedalSure focuses on modern straightforward cover; Yellow Jersey runs a broader cycling-services business; BackPedal is built around active recovery. The honest answer: we think recovery is the best bet, but it depends on whether you want the bike back or just a payout.
Which is the cheapest bike insurance?
Price varies by bike value, but headline price isn't the right metric — claim outcomes matter more. The cheapest policies often have narrow cover (long exclusion lists, low payout caps, no recovery). BackPedal bundles the tracker hardware (up to £149), professional installation, and recovery service into the subscription (annual in year 1, monthly or annual from year 2), which makes the actual cost-per-good-outcome competitive even when the headline isn't the lowest.
Why does only BackPedal offer recovery?
Traditional insurance is built around the payout — it's cheaper to operate than running a recovery team. BackPedal flipped the model: we built the recovery infrastructure first, with insurance as the safety net. Other UK bike insurers focus on the financial product; we focus on getting the bike back.
Are your comparisons fair?
